If you fall ill, don't panic. Think twice before you submit your body to a course of chemical products that may get rid of the symptoms, but fail to cure the root cause. You may think you got off lightly by taking a drug; in truth, it's more than likely that you have simply postponed your illness to a later date, and you have not allowed your immune system to flex its muscles.

If your illness is acute, then the simple rules of rest, fresh air, plenty of water and little or no food always help (this, by the way, is the natural reaction of children and animals to a bout of acute illness). Then there is a whole host of natural remedies out there to help support your body in its attempt to clear up some dust (aka toxins) and regain balance.

In this section you will find some remedies that have worked wonders for family and friends. Best of all, they cause no damage, short or long term, and have no side effects. Let nature take its course, with a bit of a helping hand from you...

I will be updating this section regularly, so check in on it every time you visit the site.

Nature’s Syrup For a Sore Throat

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

2 tbsp honey

3 drops lavender oil

3 drops tea tree oil

Place the onion in a small bowl and our the honey over it. Leave for 2 hours. Remove the onion slices and add the oil drops into the honey. Mix well together. To use, take 1 tablespoon of the syrup in the morning and another in the evening.

Warming Herbal Essence

1½ cup (300ml) water

3cm ginger root, chopped

5 cloves

1 cinnamon stick

A touch of nutmeg

1 pure herbal tea bag of your choice

Place all the ingredients except the tea bag in a pot and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and leave to simmer for 10 minutes. Add the tea bag, leave to soak for 4-5 minutes, then remove. Use 1 cm of this essence in one cup of boiling water for a warming and comforting drink.

Helping Ear Infection Naturally I

5 drops tea tree oil

5 drops lavender oil

5 drops juniper oil

Mix the oils. Use one drop of the mixture on a cotton bud. Insert the cotton bud gently into the infected ear and turn once. You can repeat the treatment the next day.

Helping Ear Infection Naturally II

2 tsp olive oil

1 clove garlic

Mash the garlic and let stand in the olive oil for a couple of hours. Drain the oil and warm it up very gently (check the temperature with your pinky). Insert  two drops of the warm oil into the infected ear.

Helping Ear Infection Naturally III

½ onion

Onion juice is reputed to be the best first aid for an infected ear. So obtain onion juice either use a juicer or grate the onion very finely. Warm the juice just a little bit – it should be lukewarm, not hot, and insert two drops into the infected ear. Covering the ear with a hot compress will also help to release blocked fluid.

Helping Ear Infection Naturally IV

If you or your child suffer fairly regularly from ear infections, pay close attention to your diet. Dairy foods are very mucous-forming, and many people lack the enzyme to digest them. White flour foods (for example white bread and cakes) and doughy products in general are also very mucous-forming.

Lavender Oil

Essential oil of Lavender is another of those wonder remedies that should find a place of honour in your natural medicine cabinet. It smells like perfume, can be used directly on the skin, and may be helpful in the following cases:-

ü       Runny nose – rub Lavender oil directly on both sides of your nose.

ü       Sore throat and cough – rub Lavender oil on the throat.

ü       Headache – rub Lavender oil on the front and temples.

ü       Cuts, wounds and burns – gently and carefully rub Lavender oil onto the affected area. The oil acts as a natural antiseptic.

ü       Scarring – if used on a wound right from the start, Lavender oil can prevent the formation of scars.

ü       Sleep – a drop or two on your pillow could help bring about that evasive sleep…

ü       Peace  - use Lavender oil in a burner for a lovely, calming odour around the room. A balm for the mind.

Olive Oil

A staple in the kitchen that is also a staple in the medicine cabinet. Just look at what it can do:-

ü     Coughing – swallow a small mixture of olive oil, egg yolk and honey.

ü     Constipation – take 1 tablespoon of olive oil first thing in the morning on an empty stomach (and check your diet!...)

ü     Kidney stones – drink masses more water and take 1-2 teaspoons olive oil first thing in the morning.

ü     Muscle pains and dry cough – massage the area with warm olive oil.

ü     Dry skin – pamper with a mixture of olive oil plus a few drops of essential oils of nutmeg, calendula and myrtle.

ü     Earache – try a few drops of warmed up olive oil in the affected ear.

Arnica Montana

This is my Number One Homeopathic remedy, and I wouldn’t want to be without it. If you have accident-prone kids, you’d do yourself a big favour by keeping a bottle of Arnica pills (potency 30C) at home. Arnica is an amazingly powerful remedy. Here are some symptoms it can alleviate:-

ü       Bruising

ü       Injuries, fractures, dislocations

ü       Torn muscles, ligaments, tendons etc.

ü       Shock

ü       Labour – before, during and after

ü       All accidents

ü       All swellings

ü       Surgery – before and after

In the absence of other instructions, use 1 pill every twenty minutes for the first hour after the event, then 1 pill an hour until improvement is felt. Continue at the rate of 3 pills a day (morning, noon, evening) and gradually reduce until full recovery.

Some Facts You May Not Know About Tea Tree Oil

If I were given the choice of keeping just one natural remedy at home, Tea Tree oil would be my likely choice, although it would stand a strong competition from Homeopathy’s Arnica and some of Dr. Bach’s Flower Remedies. Below are some reasons why Tea Tree oil (Melaleuca Alternifolia) is such a powerful addition to your natural medicine cabinet.

*   Tea Tree oil is a naturally powerful anti-fungal and anti-bacterial agent. As little as two tenths of one percent concentration of tea tree is sufficient to control the growth of many common bacteria. Clinical trials have proved the oil’s effectiveness against acne, tinea, vaginal infection and as a treatment for burns.

*   A few drops of pure Tea Tree oil on a child’s head can be an effective deterrent against head lice. The oil is useful for skin fungi, warts and verrucas; as a throat disinfectant when gargled (with plenty of water); and as decongestant when its steam is inhaled (a few drops in very hot water).

*    Tea Tree oil is an extraordinary organic solvent, which makes it so useful in toothpaste, soap and skin wash. The pure oil will actually dissolve chewing gum, making it an excellent cleaning aid.

*   Tea tree is a great deodoriser for smelly kitchen wash cloths. Soak the cloth in a bowl of water to which you add a touch of tea tree and detergent and the rags will be clean and sweet smelling overnight.

*   The by-product of tea tree distillation is superb mulch. The mulch is sterile, high fibre and highly esteemed by nurseries. Nothing goes to waste with the Tea Tree.

*   Tea Tree oil has been used as a natural antiseptic for over 70 years in Australia and is currently in use world-wide.

*   Over 40,000 seeds can sit comfortably in a teaspoon. One mature tree can produce several billion seedlings.
